Editorial Reviews:

Description
Keith Smart hit "The Shot" to secure Bob Knight's 3rd national championship at Indiana. The Hoosiers were also led by Steve Alford who nailed 7 3-pointers and Daryl Thomas who produced 20 points inside overcoming Syracuse's trio of Sherman Douglas, Rony Seikaly, and Derrick Coleman. This was the first year of the 3-pointer in the NCAA tournament.

3 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware - Missing Eight Seconds is Never Coming   August 8, 2008
Like others have stated, this DVD is missing eight seconds from the original broadcast. Not just any eight seconds, but a crucial eight seconds with just 0:38 remaining in the game.

I have contacted NCAA On-Demand about the issue and they replied that "We checked with our labs who have the master tape on hand, and that footage is missing from the master tape for whatever reason....we will not be issuing a "corrected" version of this game."

5 out of 5 stars Thank the Lord for the 'Knight' Time   November 18, 2007

The final hurrah for Indiana University basketball? Only time will tell, but there hasn't been a championship since. They came close a few years back when they met Maryland for the title, but Bob had already been dumped and that pretty well sealed IU's fate. Bob Knight has been involved in four NCAA championships; three as coach and once as a player, and has never lost. I think with him at the helm IU would have beaten Maryland; but, hey...we'll never know.

On to the game! Prior to arriving in New Orleans, Indiana wasn't given a chance in hell of beating UNLV, the overwhelming number one team in everybody's poll and unanimous pick to win it all. Jerry 'The Shark' Tarkanian bragged about letting his team visit the French Quarter and enjoy themselves the night before their matchup with IU while coach Knight was not allowing his team to have any revelry while there was work ahead of them. Bob figured there would be time to celebrate when there were no more games to be played. The difference was obvious when the two teams met, with IU emerging victorious. After the game Armand 'The Hammer' Gilliam said there was no way they should have lost to IU...but, lose they did! In the title game IU spent most of the time trying to catch up to Syracuse. Rony Seikaly was a force inside and was causing IU constant pain. Still, the Knight factor was there and in the end Darryl Thomas passed the ball behind his back to Keith Smart for the winning shot. An improbable end to an improbable tournament. Bob Knight strikes again!!! I'm borrowing a line from Bruce Campbell in the film 'Army of Darkness': "Hail to the Chief, baby!"

2 out of 5 stars Missing so much..   October 20, 2007

It's not just the eight seconds that are missing here..it's the great postgame interviews that James Brown got and the excellent pregame show, the inital version of "One Shining Moment". I got it all on VHS 20 years ago and I really wanted to see those parts again. Great game, poor DVD.

4 out of 5 stars 1987 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Championship - Indiana vs. Syracuse   September 13, 2007

A great video of good quality. Perhaps one of the most exciting college games ever. Only disappointment was there was no post-game interviews on the DVD.

4 out of 5 stars Great except for the missing 8 seconds   July 8, 2007

These NCAA championship games from NCAA on demand are great. But in the DVD of this particular game, there is one glitch. With 38 seconds left, Syracuse led 72-70. Triche (Syracuse) made 1 of 2 free throws, making it 73-70. Smart (Indiana) rebounded the missed second free throw attempt, and took the ball down court for a basket, making it 73-72. Then Indiana called timeout with :30 left. When the game resumed, Indiana pressed and fouled Coleman (Syracuse), who missed the front end of the 1-and-1 free throw. After that, Smart (Indiana) hit the winning basket for Indiana (74-73). BUT THE SEQUENCE FROM :38 TO :30 IS NOT ON THE DVD. So you do not see Triche shoot the free throw to make it 73-70, but then miss the second free throw, nor do you see the ensuing Smart basket making it 73-72. I have seen the Smart basket on video elsewhere, so I know it was part of the original TV broadcast. Why it is not on the DVD I don't know. I have written to NCAA on demand about the missing 8 seconds (not as important as the 18 minute Watergate tape gap, but still important), and have not yet gotten a reply.
